Iron Dog racers begin route to Fairbanks

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — The 2,000-mile Iron Dog snowmobile race has begun.

KTUU says the race kicked off from Big Lake about 11:00 a.m. Sunday.

The first checkpoint is in Skwentna about 89 miles away from the start of the race.

Iron Dog teams are heading to Nome and then on to the finish line in Fairbanks.

There are 39 teams participating this year.

The winning team is expected to reach the finish line next Saturday.
