We have recently discovered that the best medium for a story about musical theater is video, not soundslides. Ashleigh took pictures while I collected sound at a rehearsal of the musical “Jesus Christ Superstar” at Friends Community Church. Video would have helped Ashleigh better show the dancers and interactions of the actors rehearsing. It also would have helped me interview the good-looking and charismatic director.
But Extreme Team Three hasn’t done a Soundslide yet, so we gave it a try.
The first “teaching moment” happened while I interviewed the director. He was beautifully media-savvy and answered all my questions completely and articulately. I thought the interview was going swimmingly until I glanced at Ashleigh and saw her looking meaningfully at me and pinching her mouth into duck lips. Were my volumes too high? Was the mic too far away from the director’s mouth? After the interview I asked Ashleigh about the duck lips and she said exasperatedly that I wouldn’t stop saying “mhm, uh-huh,” and “ah” in the middle of his responses! I didn’t even realize I was doing it but sure enough, as I edit down the interview on audacity, my incessant noises interject into the director’s eloquent responses.
