FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) — A community in the unorganized area between Fairbanks and the Denali Borough will host a meeting next month to discuss studying the formation of a borough.
The city of Nenana will host the informational meeting May 7.
The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports the idea of more government in the area is not universally embraced.
The Alaska Legislature appropriated $75,000 for the city to study forming a borough and Mayor Jason Mayrand formed a committee do so.
The committee in January voted to return the money to the state but the Nenana Assembly voted to study the issue anyway.
Mayrand says he wants to find out whether Nenana’s neighbors could annex the area.
A consultant at the May meeting will discuss questions to be answered by a study.
